We are currently looking for a Director of Conservation to join our team based in Great Wigborough. Having overall responsibility for the delivery of the Trust’s conservation strategic objectives you will oversee the strategic delivery of existing projects, whilst leading and driving the planning and development of all future conservation work streams. Helping to position the Trust as the county’s leading conservation charity and will drive a strategic approach of how best to achieve wildlife protection in Essex.

Developing and leading the conservation vision for Essex is central to this role’s success. Leading and driving a credible and evidence-led shift in thinking, you’ll raise levels of ambition within the Trust and throughout the county in relation to what needs to be achieved to tackle the climate and ecological emergencies. Further to this you will promote the work of the Trust at a national scale, on TV, radio, at conferences and in meetings, engaging with MPs and senior decision makers to construct convincing arguments for why change is required in certain areas.

About you

As the Trust’s most senior ecologist, you’ll have a real flair for all aspects of conservation and will have significant experience and professional credibility to comment and lead in this area. Holding relevant qualifications (or equivalent experience) in an appropriate conservation field, you’ll have a real passion for protecting wildlife, knowledge of environmental issues and significant experience and excellent working knowledge of landscape conservation issues relating to a broad range of species and habitats.

As a confident and credible influencer, with strong negotiation and interpersonal skills, you’ll be a great networker and will have the ability to build long-term relationships. Communicating in an engaging and compelling way, you’ll be able to tailor your style to engage a variety of different audiences.

We want our people to be as diverse as nature, so we particularly encourage applications from people who are underrepresented within our sector, including people from minority backgrounds and people with disabilities. We are committed to creating a movement that recognises and truly values individual differences and identities.

As a Disability Confident employer, we are committed to offering an interview to anyone with a disability that meets all the essential criteria for the post. Please let us know if you require any adjustments to make our recruitment process more accessible.

Essex Wildlife Trust is the county’s leading conservation charity, committed to protecting wildlife and inspiring a lifelong love of nature. We protect wildlife through landscape conservation, engagement on our nature reserves and discovery centres and via campaigns that help to give wildlife a greater voice in our county. We are a local wildlife charity supported by over 1900 volunteers and over 39,000 members. Together we protect and care for wildlife and wild places across Essex.
